New Study Finds Mediterranean Diet Cuts Dementia Risk by 23%
A new study published in BMC Medicine suggests that following a Mediterranean diet can reduce the risk of developing dementia. Researchers at Newcastle University analyzed data from over 60,000 individuals over a nine-year period and found that those who adhered to the diet the most were 23% less likely to develop dementia than those who did not follow the diet rigorously. The Mediterranean diet is a healthy, mostly plant-based eating style that includes nutrient-rich whole foods such as vegetables, fruits, whole grains, fatty fish, and healthy fats like olive oil.
The MIND diet is a combination of the Mediterranean and DASH diets and is recommended for improved brain health in older adults. Both diets encourage physical activity and support heart health, and the eating patterns are high in antioxidants and anti-inflammatory agents that help reduce oxidative damage to blood vessels. However, neither diet offers guaranteed protection against dementia or any other chronic condition. It is important to note that other factors such as genetics and lifestyle may also play a role in cognitive decline and the development
of dementia.
