Drawing blood to early detect Alzheimer’s disease
Traditionally, Alzheimer’s disease (AZ) is diagnosed with behavioral and cognitive performance. An international research team leading by the HKUST has developed a simple blood test to detect Alzheimer’s disease. The researchers developed a composite biomarker panel that consisted of 19 AZ-related proteins. They then generated a AZ classification score by using this panel together with other factors (e.g., age, sex). This classification score was found to be able to differentiate individuals with AZ from healthy control with an accuracy level up to 96%. This score was also able to delineate the stages of the disease.
