Metabolism changes in a way that you might not have thought about before
You might have heard people blaming their metabolism for thickening waistlines even though they just drink water. But, a new study with more than 6,600 participants across 29 countries suggests that the metabolic rate peaks much earlier and starts to decline much later than we previously thought. Surprisingly, infants have the highest metabolic rate of all. This rate slows by 3 percent every year until they reach their 20s. People’s metabolisms are the most stable between their 20s and 50s and the rate doesn’t start to decline until their 60s. The researchers conclude that our metabolisms do change over the course of our lifespans but in ways that we have not fully appreciated.
